If then results not adding up in auto sum

I am doing a business spreadsheet which I am trying to make as simple as possible for my husband to use. When inputting the hours we are billing for I want each hour to be x £8 but just showing 8. Except for when 5 is entered where there is a discount and the amount is 35.

I have done this with this formula:

=IF(d4=1,"8",IF(d4=2,"16",IF(d4=3,"24",IF(d4=4,"32", IF(d4=5,"35", IF(d4=0,""))))))

It works perfectly but now the autosum for that column will not work. I have checked all the relevant cells are number cells and have changed the final "0" value to show 0. What am I doing wrong?

You do not need to put quotes around the numbers - if you do, this will result in text values rather than numbers.
