tables are actual objects in excel. you can probably insert them, one at a time, through the interface, and change the dimensions and resize what you need in their own grids as you see fit.
You cannot alter the width of part of a column. You can remove gridlines and use borders so that it appears that the column is changing widths but in reality, you will be working with 2 columns.
