Still able to edit locked cells - read on. Not the same as other fixes

    Hi,

I have a problem whereby users can still edit locked cells when the worksheet is locked. This only happens when I use the "Allow Users to Edit Ranges" option but there are no spurious ranges to clear out so that isn't a fix.

Here's how I test; start with a shiny new spreadsheet. Select all and make sure all the cell properties are locked. Select a few cells and unlock them. Protect the worksheet and test. Everything works as expected. The cells I unlocked can be edited, the others cannot.

Now; with the same spreadsheet unlocked again, I reapply the locked property to the few cells I initially unlocked, I then go to "Allow Users to Edit Ranges", select the few cells I was working with as the Range and then Permissions. In the Permissions section, I add a user - someone else (via Active Directory) not me (just the easiest way to test by myself), set them as Allow in the permissions and save my way out. I protect the worksheet.

So now, only the user I selected should be able to change the cells. I should not be able to. In fact though I can edit any cells in that range but I cannot edit any of the other cells outside of that range. So what has happened is that setting a single user allowed to edit those cells has in fact enabled everyone to edit those cells.

Surely this is very wrong. It does not achieve what the function "Allow Users to Edit Ranges" is supposed to i.e. you should be able to set individual users to edit individual ranges. I've done it before, so I know how this should work.

Either I'm going crazy or there is a bug. Remember this is a clean brand new spreadsheet, no code or anything else funky going on.

Any help would really be appreciated. I'm going round in circles here.

    Thanks,

    Tow

The way it works is this. You need to apply a password. Only the people that you gave special permission do not need the password to the range. Everyone else would need that password. I know it's convoluted but that's how Microsoft set it up.

    Thanks for your reply ChemistB,

I was sure the password requirement was an option. I definitely have other spreadsheets that have multiple defined ranges and multiple different users with a mixture of access to some ranges but not others but significantly; no passwords.

If this is the case that passwords are required, I could live with it if wasn't for the annoying password box the jumps up every time you hit a protected cell. I can just go through and put any old junk password into each range - after all no one is going to use that password; I won't use it because I'll have access anyway and I don't want other users to modify the cells, so I'm not going to give them the password. Seems like a completely superfluous and redundant option. I could maybe see the need outside of an AD environment where other users can't easily be specified, therefore anyone with the password can gain access?

Yeah, I don't get it either. If I were in charge, I'd do it differently.
