    Smoothing of Noisy Data

    Hello,

I have measured displacement data for 2-dof vibrating masses and I am required to find velocity and acceleration values by differentiating. These values are then compared to calculated values. The data obtained for acceleration has quite a lot of error. What is the best method to smooth this data and reduce the noise?

    Hi there.

Hard to say without seeing what you have.

A picture is worth 1,000 words. An Excel sheet is worth 1,000 non-editable pictures.

Please read the yellow banner about sample worksheets, at the top of the screen. Act on its guidelines and post a SMALL sample sheet complete with an explanation and some expected results.

    Hi Glenn,

I've attached the excel and reduced the sheet size down considerably. Thanks for your help

Guessing that it's in F &G of acceleration... what is the rationale for the "smoothing" applied to these columns?

    Re: Smoothing of Noisy Data

Its the measured data for acceleration that requires to be smoothed. As you can see from the charts tab the acceleration is noisy compared to the other data for velocity and displacement. I was hoping to make the curve smoother so that it can be compared to the calculated data more clearly. Would you have any suggestions of the best method to do this? I have used the exponential smoothing feature on the data currently
