Excel locks up

I am CONSTANTLY in Excel to the extent that I may have 4 or 5 workbooks open at once. As well, I am bouncing back and forth between them, Gmail and MS Edge to various sites looking things up. Seems like every day, I click back onto one the Excel sheets only to find out Excel is locked up and nothing can be done any more on any workbook. I end up having to close out of everything and reboot so that I can continue working in Excel.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this happens and maybe how to get moving again without having to reboot?

Hi, when you say 'Locks up' what do you mean, that it's 'not responding' or really stuck?
And Reboot, what the entire system or just Excel? You can generally kill the Excel process using the Task Manager
Which version of Excel are you using?
Are these files macro embedded and if so do you have Workbook_Deactivate or Workbooks_Activate events running?

Hi and thanks for your reply.

When I say "locks up", what I am referring to is that when I have one or many Excel workbooks open and click on a web site or some other program then come back to the Excel workbook, when I click on it, nothing happens. It doesn't record key strokes to enter text or edit a formulas or even move around the file.

I am using a Lenovo laptop with Windows 10 and Excel 2016. I am usually not working in files with macro but if so, they are not running any events.

Very strange, I don't recognize it and I often have many workbooks open and switch to Edge or other to lookup something but no lockups, do you have any AddIn installed or something similar?

I have no AddIns.

Have you tried reinstalling Excel/Office, or repairing the installation?

No, but t looks like that may be my next thing to do.

How's the diskspace on the Laptop?
Clear cache and temporary files, check Registry with for example CCCleaner
