Get data from Web slow on first refresh only
Hi guru's,
I have a simple workbook with a Get Data -> From Web query to fetch exchange rates from XE.com. Whenever I open the workbook and refresh the data the first refresh is very slow, around 2 minutes. Any subsequent refreshes finish within 3 seconds. Any ideas of the cause and how to resolve? I suspect it has something to do with the initial opening of a connection to the web page?

I have attached my file. Hopefully it shows the same behaviour on your side. You will have to enable macros and disable privacy settings for the query to work.

OK - I'm cautious about enabling macros. I thought we were dealing with a PowerQuery set-up here. Can you provide a sample workbook that contains just the query?
Try this one, it's just the query without passing the data as a parameter.
It took about a minute for the connection window to come up, and it is now trying to connect - been about a minute so far. Still not there!
Now connected, so in all about 2.5 minutes.
Refresh under three seconds.
So it behaves the same for you? Initial refresh is slow, any refreshes thereafter is quick! Any ideas?
Yep and nope, in that order!
Accessing the site directly is very fast.
I'm stumped. It's almost like establishes a handshake between Excel and the site on first refresh, then it refreshes quickly as long as the handshake is intact (maybe time dependent or until the file is re-opened). Thanks for checking!
It looks like it. You could contact the site owners and see if it's a known issue. It certainly isn't because of your parameter - we've ruled that out, I think.
