Trying to make a pie chart or equivalent.

I am looking to make some kind of chart that clearly shows where my money is going. I'm thinking a pie chart and I can't figure it out on going to Insert - Charts. I just want my numbers compared to see where my money is.

The subject/place is line 1, the sum/total is line 22. Everything in-between doesn't probably matter.

    Thank you!

Please share some sample data. Usually, if you select your data and then go Insert | Chart it will give you appropriate options.

There are instructions at the top of the page explaining how to attach your sample workbook.

A good sample workbook has just 10-20 rows of representative data that has been desensitised. It also has expected results mocked up, relevant cells highlighted and a few explanatory notes.

    Administrative Note:

Members will tailor the solutions they offer to the version of Office (Excel) that you have. Please check that your forum profile is up-to-date in this respect. If you aren't sure, in Excel go to File | Account and report what it says below the MS logo at the top of that page. If your version is for Mac, please also state this. Thanks.

Re: Trying to make a pie chart or equivalent.

And your Excel version? Still 2007?

You will need to build a summary table drawing values and labels from the (very poorly laid out) main data. This will be easier if you have a newer version of Excel (waiting to hear). You will then be able to build a pie chart based on the summary table (which could be a pivot table, if your layout could change).

But this is why I need help. How can I know that? It says xlsx at the end... Does that help?

I explained how in post #2:

If you aren't sure, in Excel go to File | Account and report what it says below the MS logo at the top of that page. If your version is for Mac, please also state this.
Are you open to changing the layout?

I fully understand that you need help, and that is precisely what I am giving. However, there are certain ducks we need to get into line if that help is to be appropriate to your Excel version and will work for you. This means questions from me and answers from you, please. Thanks.

Re: Trying to make a pie chart or equivalent.

In EXCEL, go to the FILE menu option at the top, then click on ACCOUNT at the bottom. What does it say directly below the MS logo at the top on the right?

Re: Trying to make a pie chart or equivalent.

Great - then please update your forum profile from Excel 2007 to Excel 2019.

Now, to the problem: I asked if you are open to a change in the layout of your data. Are you?

Re: Trying to make a pie chart or equivalent.

In the meantime, here's an idea of what could be done.

I normalised your data into one table with four fields: category, sub-category, amount and notes. I then inserted a pivot chart, which produced the summary table and the bar chart at the top. From the category and amount data in the pivot table, I then inserted a pie chart below.

Is this the sort of thing you want?
