How to create ohlc standard bar chart, NOT candlestick chart in Excel.

Excel includes a rarely used, limited value hlc (high-low-close) stock price bar chart but does not include the more widely used and more useful bar chart which includes the opening price. For some reason it thinks ohlc charts are the worthless, more fashionable candlestick charts. Is it possible to make a dense ohlc chart in excel?

In the chart type dialog Stock second sub type is OHLC

Does you definition of a OHLC chart differ from the one in excel? If so you will need to show example of your versions of the chart

It does differ. Excel has a non-standard HLC chart - line with tick to the right for the close. Like this:

I want a standard OHLC chart with an added tick to the left showing the open, like this.

I get invalid attachment for your latest attachment (I'm guessing a picture to show what you expect an OHLC chart to look like). Be sure to follow the instructions in yellow at the top of the page so that your picture attaches correctly.

You can select the data markers used for high/low/close and change to built in or create your own picture of a marker and use that.

Sorry for the pic error. Here is a pic of the standars OHLC barchart. The high low line has a left dash for the open and a right dash for the close. Not a combination chart, NOT an "HLC" chart, its an "OHLC" chart.ohlc.png.

i cant speak for Windows with 365, but on Mac with 2021, you can create an OHLC chart, and although it doesn't look like your image it does take account of the Open with the HLC.. ie: it is OHLC.Screen Shot 2022-05-01 at 3.34.43 pm.png

Thanks for the try. That is a version of the worthless, imho, candlestick chart. The standard OHLC chart, for decades, is exactly what my pic looks like. Obviously, excel does NOT offer this chart and, apparently, even the excel wizards cannot create it.

Re: How to create ohlc standard bar chart, NOT candlestick chart in Excel.

I'm not sure it is fair to say that we failed when Andy gave a solution (HLC) that should extend readily to OHLC. The key thing was understanding how to draw and add custom shapes to the chart data series, which should work for any chart type, including an OHLC. Did you understand what Andy did to add the left and right horizontal marks to the data series?

If you don't like Andy's because it's an HLC, here's how I made an OHLC chart, using the same "add a custom picture as the marker" for the chart.

    1) I started with the same data table. I inserted a column between the date and High columns and entered some random values for Open (and entered "Open" in G6).
    2) Select the table and insert Excel's built in OHLC chart.
    3) Select the "down bars" (or "up bars") and press Delete/Clear to get rid of the up/down bars.
    4) Select the "open" data series and paste the left (blue) picture onto the open data series.
    5) Select the "close" data series and paste the right (green) picture onto the close data series.
    6) Select the "low" data series and remove the marker.

At this point, the only hiccup is that, when open and close are almost the same, then one custom marker gets overshadowed by the white part of the other marker. I ameliorated (but not fully eliminated) it by editing the pictures so that the white portion is 0 pts high rather than 3 pts. Someone who is better at "drawing" pictures might have a better approach to fully fixing this.

You give up too soon, just because a "wizard" illustrates the technique but doesn't give you exactly what you want.

I would take a stab at this but the cadence of the entire thread is kind of sour...

If you truly are seeking help, share what you have done and we can show you where to navigate from there.
I appreciate that you put a picture, but what is the dataset that you are drawing from.

EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE - And none of it is Magic - that is a laymen way of excusing ones lack of knowledge and in your use of it became an insult... hence my sour comment.

If you want to pursue this further... build a mock set of data with a picture on sheet - if you have to draw it in paint do so, but embed it in the sheet with the data and an explanation of what you see in your version of your chart so that the world can help you make what you want to see in your view.

    Good luck

Thank you for the reply but waterfall is not it. And the "Open-High-Low-Close" example is mislabeled. It is a "Candlestick" chart. Candlesticks are inefficient visually with a rectangle that provides no information.

Nothing is done. Excel has a built in HLC chart and so far, OHLC is not there. Not looking for workarounds but only asking if I was missing the answer in Excel. Obviously there is no built in Excel solution.
