    Excel custom date formatting

    Hi,

I am having an excel sheet that contains the date in the following format -

    Jan - 23
    Feb - 23
    Mar - 23
    Jan - 24
    Feb - 24
    Mar - 24

My expectation is that excel should consider 'Jan - 23' as 1/1/2023, 'Feb - 23' as 2/1/2023 , 'Mar - 23' as 3/1/2023. But instead, excel assumes the date as 1/23/2022, 2/23/2022,3/23/2022 and so on. How can I make sure that the date format is 1/1/2023 when 'Jan -23' is entered.

I tried to customize the date format by using the type as 'mmm-yy' and clicked 'ok' but it doesn't seem to be working for me.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

    Regards

    Re: Excel custom date formatting

    Hi Sravya,

Dates in Excel are the number of days since 1/1/1900. If your dates are really text instead of numbers you need to change them to number of days since....
What happens if you insert a "20" in front of your "23" and make them like "Feb - 2023"? Then enter and see if they convert correctly.

We really need a sample workbook to see if your dates are numbers or text and what you expect the result to be.
One test is worth a thousand opinions.

    Re: Excel custom date formatting

    Hi Marvin,

Thank you for your help. I think our dates are text. I added 20 in front of 23 i.e. Jan 2023 as suggested and it changed to Jan - 23 properly.
