Using hyperlink function with URL from another cell

    Hello,

I have a spreadsheet in which each row needs a hyperlink to an external website. The urls are in column B and I used the HYPERLINK function to create links in column A:

Please Login or Register to view this content.
which I then copied down to the succeeding rows. So far, so good. The hyperlinks work. But I still have the ugly URLs in column B, which I want to get rid of. If I delete them, the hyperlinks no longer work. How can I get the hyperlinks to stand on their own two feet, no longer dependent on column B? If I copy the hyperlink as a value, all I get is Friendly text, so that's not the answer.

    Thanks in advance,

    Russ

    a couple of options:
    1) **IMO the best option, Hide column B. Right click on column B and select Hide.
    2) Change font color in column B to white so you cannot see text.
    3) Put URLS into another tab and change your hyperlink() to reference the new tab. Then hide tab.

as you can see the underlying solution is you have to keep the text for the function to reference.

    Thanks dosydos.

I can certainly hide the URL column as you suggest, but I'm a little disappointed that there isn't some way to convert the link created with the HYPERLINK function to the situation one would get by manually typing in the URL and the display text, as one would get using "insert link" from the insert menu tab. Or maybe a different way to create the link in the first place (perhaps a macro?)

try attaching a sample copy of your workbook. See the yellow ribbon at the top.
Might help us think of some other solutions that we can test and trial and error on.

Re: Using hyperlink function with URL from another cell

Thanks, but I created a fully satisfactory solution based on a macro that I found online that replaces a URL with a hyperlink (in the same cell), written by Michael Milette. I am not going to post it because it is not mine. All I had to do was add the parameter, texttodisplay:="friendly text" since all my links have the identical friendly text. Then, I put all the URLs in column A, selected them, and ran the macro. Voila, links in column A not dependent on column B.

You can post a link to it if you found it online. That would be helpful to others. Thanks.
