Presenting a bar chart with years side by side

    Hi,

I'm trying to present a bar chart with years side by side for specific months.

What I'm trying to show is clients coming in, clients coming out for the same month, ie January and February, for two different years and the balance of the clients represented by a dot, whether it's positive or negative, as you can see in the image below.

However, what I currently have is a large space between the different years, and I had to manually change the colour for 2022 and also for the dots (which are plotted on a secondary axis).

    Plots.PNG

    My questions are:

    - What can I do to reduce the gap between the 2021 and 2022 to make them appear side by side (I've tried adjusting size of bars but this puts them all together)?
    - How can I make the negative values automatically appear in a different colour but also directly underneath the positive graphs?
    - How can I plot the balance of the two and make it vary in terms of colour?

    Thanks,

It is not clear to me what you are allowed to change, but I find that many charting questions really end up being spreadsheet questions, because the real work is arranging the data in the spreadsheet. Once the data is correctly arranged in the spreadsheet, creating the chart is easy. Basically, what I see you describing is a "clustered and stacked" column chart. Here is a tutorial: https://peltiertech.com/clustered-st...mn-bar-charts/ Basically, you build a "sparse" data arrangement with empty rows, columns, and cells where needed to get the correct look for the chart.

I'm not sure how many "colours" you want for the "balance" (line chart) series, but I would expect to follow a strategy like this "conditional formatting of charts" strategy, where each colour is in its own column: https://peltiertech.com/conditional-...-excel-charts/

The strategies usually needed for the kind of chart you describe are in those two tutorials. Let us know which steps or concepts you have trouble implementing.

Re: Presenting a bar chart with years side by side

Thank you very much for this link.

I have to admit this is a lot more complex then what I would have ever imagined it to be. I'm still trying to get the axes to align perfectly.

At least I now know what type of graph this is called.

    Thanks
