Time Format Excel: Change hh:mm:ss to just hours or minutes

    Dear All,

This is my first post so apologies if anything is missing. I work in the hospitality industry and we have new systems implemented that give a lot of data that we would like to start using.

I have a question about the time format that Excel seems to be applying to a time period.

The system is exporting the data in CSV as hh:mm:ss (hours:minutes:seconds) for example 122:44:56. Excel is not reading it the same way and is converting it to amount of days and then hours (less than 24 hours), minutes and seconds. So this is what excell displays in the cell: 05/01/1900 02:44:56. The 05/01/1900 means it is 5 days, and then 2 hours 44 minutes and 56 seconds.

Is it possible for Excel to just show this in amount of hours or even amount of minutes? I have tried several formatting options but not getting the data as we need it.

Attached is the sheet and all we want to do is calculate the amount of calls per hour or revenue per hour for example.

    Thank you for your help,

    Ton

    B18 = 122:44:56

    format/ general: 5.11453
    or
    format/custom/ Type: [hh] = 122
    or
    format/custom/ Type: [mm] = 7364

    5 days + 2 hours + 44 minutes + 56 seconds = 5*24 hours + 2 hours + 44 minutes + 56 seconds = 122 hours + 44 minutes + 56 seconds = 122:44:56, isn't that correct?

Re: Time Format Excel: Change hh:mm:ss to just hours or minutes

    Hi All,

Thank you for your help and thank you for correcting it!

I actually found a solution to convert it to minutes (the cell with the data times 1440 (which is the amount of minutes per day) and that did the trick.

The other solutions were still displaying the 05/01/1900 02:44:56 in the cell and converting it to a hard number to be used in other formulas.

Thank you for your help all!
