I have 2 merged cells where each has the same value, but I have no idea how it was do

    Hello,

Let me start by saying I'm aware that avoiding merged cells is usually the best option as all the values but one get removed (usually), but since I've got an example where this didn't happen, I'm hoping to find a way to reproduce it

In the example, I have pasted the original merged cells in B3/C3 and you can see that B3=C3="CVA GROUP"

In row 5 the 2 cells were unmerged and you can see the formatting is different for C5 but the values are still the same.

Row 7 the cells are remerged and C7's value is removed as a consequence

Finally Row 9 is the original from B3/C3 with an attempt to change the value to "EXERCISE GRP" but here, only the first value was changed and the original second value was retained (and hidden).

Any ideas on how to rename the original such that both cells return the same new value?

    Hey there,

This one is a bit sneaky.
Sort of a hack that I don't think Microsoft really intended but it is possible to hide information in the merged cell.

There are good uses for this, but its for the crafty to play this way.

All that you need to do is first fill in the data. Both Left and Right (This isnt just for 2 cells but that is what you are doing in your example... SHAPE will be key in a moment, for this the shape is 1x2 (1 row X 2 col))

Lets be ahead of the game, knowing your intent is to always have both cells represent the displayed merged value... simply make the right = the left...
In your example, Unmerge Exercise GRP and in C9 Type = B9. Now they say the same thing!

Now Merge any two cells side by side (You can use ones that are present but for example sake, merge two new ones)

Now that it is done...here comes the magic!!!!

Click on the merged cells and click ...ready... Format Painter. Yup! thats it, Format Painter, once you click that lil guy the merged cell will have the running ants to let you know it is mocking what is selected.
Simply Paint your desired merge in this case click B9 and it will cover up C9, but C9 will remain =B9

Now when you write something in the newly merged cell, you will be updating B9 and C9 will equal that!

    Tricky Tricky Tricks...

AMAZING! Thank you so much for this workaround! And the end result means the even less savvy users can change the value as they please. Thanks again!
