Using longitudinal weights: in need of explanation

Longitudinal weights are only given for about half of the values in my dataset. Am I supposed to multiply these by the existing weights (and the remainder by 1)? Are the existing weights like the wave 1 weights which I have to multiply by the longitudinal weights for their wave? If so why do they exist at all--why not just give the multiplied, accurate version?

Obviously, x 1 has no effect on the VALUE of a number... but what it does do is to convert text that LOOKS like a number into a number. The other normal ways of doing this are +0 or -- or data/text to columns/finish.

If the x1 values are in column B =a1x1

go to column A and remove any alignment. Do some align to the left (they're text)?
