Sheet freezes until I click outside the sheet then back in

This doesnt happen predictably so it's difficult to get help. When I'm working within (any) spreadsheet, the sheet will freeze. I click on another window, any window, then back onto the sheet and it works again for a while. It also often doesn't highlight the cell I'm in but if you look at the cell contents on the ribbon you can see that you're in the right cell. I also often get an error message that there is a problem with the copy paste but then it goes ahead and pastes like I asked it to. We've uninstalled and reinstalled office but I'm not sure where to go from here. I'd like to blame my machine but everything else is working fine. I do a lot of work in Google Sheets as well with no issues. Has anyone else had to deal with anything similar? TIA.
