Curious if this is even possible

I'm working on designing a dashboard and I was wondering if it's possible to use a smart phone to scan data and have that data auto-populate into specific cells. Just as an example, let's say I wanted to scan the barcode of a food item and have the nutritional info populate auto-magically much like it does in MyFitnessPal. Is this possible?

I saw a running post about two years ago that performed what you described. The OP wanted to use it in a warehouse inventory setting.
So ... the macro data is out there somewhere ....
