    Summing Values in Blocks

    Hi

I have attached a small table with the logic I need built into a formula.

I have tried for half a day and have got nowhere.

The sheet holds details of bank deposits, and then either on the same row or in the rows below there is a breakdown of the deposit. The value in the Total Deposit column is the sum of the breakdown for the deposit.

The formula needs to go in the Column Total Deposit and agree to the value in the Target column.

    Any ideas

    Thanks

Your data layout is probably in need of redesign, which is why you are finding this so hard. I can't understand what you are trying to do. In particular:

In row 6 you have a deposit of $30, net transaction of $30, yet break it down into two elements of 10 and 15 which sum to 25. I can't reconcile the deposit of $30 with the Total Deposit of $25.

In row 8 you have a withdrawal of $10, net transaction of -$10, yet a breakdown of $4 with total deposit of $4. From a simple bookkeeping standpoint I cannot understand how a withdrawal can result in a deposit.

If I ignore all of that, and just give you a formula for column R that will sum the "Breakdown" values for that date, see attached revision.

    Re: Summing Values in Blocks

Thank you for your time and effort - the result was nearly right - there was only one wrong number S8 was 318 when it should be 4.

    Thanks again

Cool Re: Summing Values in Blocks

    Thank YOu

First of all apologies for the inconvenience caused by the breakdown sum not agreeing to the total. I should have ensured this was fixed. I did it when I was ensuring that I would be able to see if the breakdown agreed to Column I or not.

Your solution works very well - Thank you again
