Dates Unknowingly Change

When opening up a spreadsheet created by someone else, the dates suddenly change from what they were originally entered as. They go back approximately 4 years, 2 months, and 2 days. For example, if my friend entered in 3/3/04, it will show up when I open the spreadsheet as 1/1/00. Is this because we are possibly using different versions of excel? Regardless, is there are quick way of fixing the dates without either manually changing each cell, or without having to use a formula to add 4 years, 2 months, and 2 days to each cell?

You are using a different date system. In the help menu look up 1904 in the date system. It should tell you how to change it
