need formula to return last non empty column

I need a couple of formulas relating to the same sort of thing.

First I need something that will give me the last non empty column in a specified row, i.e. i have a table and need to know where the last entry in this table is so that i can compare the last entry with column B.

Second i need the same thing but for rows i.e. return the last non empty cell in a specified column.

Im sure these must be quite common things so someone probably has them to hand.
