changing the colour of the buttons

how do you change thecolour of the macro buttons in excel

Do you mean a command button? If so then create a button using the Visual Basic toolbar not the Forms toolbar. Then select the button, right click and select Properties, find Backcolor in the properties window and click the cell next to it and select your color, for the font properties look for ForeColor and Font.
