total:How do I resolve this?

I received a file from MS Access with the $amounts in a column, however I can't seem to be able to total the column. I changed the format to accounting, currency etc but nothing seeme to work. How do I resolve this?

Try using =VALUE(A1) to change them all to values. I had a similar problem and this seemed to work.
