Linking columns so data 'flows'

-Does anyone know how to link columns so that data entered will flow from one column to the next. There's a function similar to this in Quark, but I'd like to be able to do it in Excel.

A little more explication: say for instance I was listing a group of plant names and wanted them to flow across 3 columns. Is there a way in Excel that I can enter the names say in A1, hit return and have that first entry move to A2, & A3 etc.
Say I wanted the column to end at A5 and then continue 'flowing' to B1, B2 etc.

Anyone know if that's possible in Excel? Thx.
