I have a row of dates that are formatted to show the day of the week,
i.e., 'Wed, Fri, etc.
When a cell in the first row is Wed, I want the cell below it to
appear in purple. How?
I have Excel 97.

Suppose the cell which has Wed is A1, and you want to format cell A2 as purple. Select cell B2, go to FORMAT > CONDITIONAL FORMATTING. In the drop down which shows "Cell value is", select Formula Is and in the box enter
=A1="Wed"
And select the required format.

Hi!
Assume the dates are in the range A1:G1.
Select the range A2:G2.
Goto Format>Conditional Formatting.
Select Formula Is and enter this formula:
=WEEKDAY(A1)=4
Click the Format button and select the style(s) you want.
OK out
