Hi!
What indeed!
I've never seen any, but they may simply be symbols (characters of some kind). You could try to find out by renaming one of the sheets. Right-click on the tab: rename : put in some recognisable text.

What black box symbols? What do they look like? Are they on all the tabs?

Square bullets represent an "unprintable" characters,
so that you can see that something is there. But the font used
for tabs should be rather complete.
The characters you are not allowed to use on the worksheet tabs
are : \ / ? * [ or ]
and you would not be able to use them at all.
If they were in a cell and they were a new line character Chr(10)
you can turn on line wrap and get the new line.
Try asking for a rename of the worksheet tab, copy the characters
to the clipboard and paste into a cell then use =code(Mid(A1,5,1))
if it is the fifth character.
Please let us know what you found. (Hopefully an answer)
