    working out duration

    Hi,

I wondered if someone might be able to help me out. It's probably incredibly simple, but I just can't get my head around it.

In one cell I have the date 01/01/2005

In the next cell I have the date 05/01/2005

In the next cell I want it to automatically work out the duration between these two dates in days. eg: 5 days

what sum is it that i need in this 3rd column?

    Help, would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    M

Well, when I tried it, I entered both dates formatted as dates in A1 and B1 and in C1 i entered =B1-A1 formatted as a number. This resulted in 120 which is the number of days between those dates.

I'm not sure where Neopolitan got 120 days, but as he said, if A1 contains 1/1/2005 and B1 contains 5/1/2005 (assuming d/m/yyyy format), then simply...

    =B1-A1+1

...and format the cell as 'General'.

    Hope this helps!

Well, I got 120 days in two ways: 1) Excel calculated that reults given the formula that I used and 2) I verified that it was correct by looking on my desk calendar and counting the days between 01/01/05 & 05/01/05.

    Hi Neopolitan,

Oh, I see. You assumed that the date was in the format m/d/yy. Oh well, in any case, the solution you provided was correct.

    Cheers!
