I wish to enter a fraction in cell A1 and perform a calculation on it. However, I would like the fraction to remain exactly as entered.

e.g. 5/4 would stay as 5/4 in cell A1 and not change to 1 1/4

If I format the cell as a text box, the cell will dispay 5/4, but I can not perform a calculation from it. How do I get around this?

Hi!

Custom number format using ?/? will do what you describe.

But neither it nor ??/?? can be guaranteed to leave your fractions unmodified. There is a tendency for them to be reduced to the lowest common denominator.
