    protection and passwords

    Hello all,

Is it possible to have certain cells with attached formulas to be locked and un-eraseable by protecting it with a password, without having a password for the whole worksheet? Example, if cell A1 has a formula and it was proctected (just that cell) with a password and one of the users typed in somthing in cell A!, it would not overide the original formula with out a password?

    Thanks,

I dont think so, not at least without going into the realms of macros.

If its a simple guard against accidentally erasing them, you could apply cell validation after you've written the formula.

    Good afternoon (again) AlP

You can indeed, you need to use the Tools > Protection > Protect Sheet function. First you need to highlight the cells you DON'T want protecting and ctrl + 1 and go to the protection tab and uncheck the "Locked" box. Then go to Tools > Protection > Protect Sheet, put in your password (twice) and that's it.

Just as an afterthought this method of protection is not that secure and can be undone with someone with (a) enough knowledge or (b) a crafty program, so don't trust your deepest darkest secrets with it - but to protect from the casual user it's OK.
