    Conditional Formatting Apply to Range

I want to set up a conditional formatting rule that is applied to all values of a range that are less than the maximum value within that range. I can get this to work if the range is fixed, but if I try and apply the rule to more cells it requires updating.

Currently I have rule X where Cell Value is less than "=max($A$1:$A$10)" applied to range "$A$1:$A$10".

What I want to do is change the range set in max to be all the cells to which the conditional formatting is set to run on so that as the rule is applied to more cells it changes the range in max.

    Does that make sense?

If you want to include the entire Column A, try this:
    =MAX(A:A)
Click on star (*) below if this helps
