I am trying to use excel to retrieve data from a database that is not microsoft access. It is a software that I have purchased from a company. What do I have to do to retrieve data from such database? Thanks much!!!

Have you tried Data>Import External Data>New Database Query and followed the instructions from the Choose Data Source pop up?
If all else fails, contact the seller/maker of your database for instructions on how/if their system integrates with Excel.
Without knowing the database you are referring to, specific details cannot be given (I don't think any of us on this forum are psychic)
