Excel auto filter doesn't recoginize case - won't filter AA from A

In excel 2003 when using the auto filter, the filter does not recognize the
case of letters. For example AA, Aa and aa would be considered the same.

Is there currently a method to overcome this problem or can one be added?

You could use another column and put a formula:

    =exact(a2,"aa")
    (and drag down the column)

And filter on that for Trues/falses.

If you're doing the equivalent of Contains, you could use another formula:

    =isnumber(find("aa",a2))
    to look for aa
