Excel is selecting multiple cells when I place cursor into just one cell

Please refer to the attachment for a picture idea of what I am talking about.

For certain cells within my spreadsheet, if I place my cursor into said cell it will also highlight the cell directly above it (see the white space above the cursor in my picture). Now this normally wouldn't be an issue but I often need to reference cells which are being highlighted, and when they're highlighted I can't reference them.

I've tried to fix it by doing the following:

    1. Shift + F8 to get out of 'Extend Selection' mode
    2. Shift key pressed 5 times to get out of sticky keys
    3. Changing the View layout and adjusting the zoom level several times
    4. Setting all page margins to 0
    5. Escape key pressed to disable any modes

I've read the above suggestions from the MS Community, and most people seem to think this is a bug within Excel.

Is there a way to fix this? It only happens in certain cells (usually the entire row for that matter).

I've found it can do this if you are in page layout view. Switch to normal view and see if it persists.

Currently am in Normal view (which I always use), and problem still persists.

Have you pressed F8 (Extend Selection)? Check the status bar at the bottom left of the Excel window to see if Extend Selection is indicated. If it is, press F8.

Extend Selection is not selected, as when I press F8 it turns on.

Are you using a wireless mouse and do you have problems in any other program? The small transceivers used by some wireless mice can go bad. If you are using one of these, remove the transceiver and try a different mouse. If this is a laptop, this can also be a sign that the keyboard is starting to fail.
