    formula numeric input

Is there any way to have Excel assume, as it should, that a number input in a formula means a value? For example, is there a way to change the default so that instead of inputting "+7+8" to calculate 15, that I could just input "7+8". Lotus used to work this way, and I have to believe that Excel would allow the same capability.
