Excel should allow me to change default number formats

I get irritated with some of the default settings within excel. I see that
you can change the default setting for fonts, but not for number formats. Is
there anyway there something that I'm missing with respect to this?

alt+'(apostrophe) will bring up the style box where you may change the
defaults.
