how do I stop "copy" taking a picture instead of copying text

I'm using Office Professional 2003 and I'm having a nightmare with copying
things........ all my usual approaches (ctrl-v etc) seem to result in a
picture of my application being stuck in the clipboard instead of the text or
object that I was copying - it's making copy& paste almost unworkable. I'm
guessing it's something to do with the Office Clipboard, but I've turned that
off and it's still happening ...

How are you determining that the clipboard contains a picture? Have you
    tried pasting?
