Data validation drop down with ghost drop down

I have an Excel sheet that has several columns of data validation boxes that work perfectly. The problem is that suddenly, without warning, another empty data validation box randomly shows up on top of the true drop down and I cannot get rid of it and the only way to get to the true box is with arrow keys, the mouse chooses the blank box because it is on top. It has happened on several tabs and I don't know why or how to fix. All columns are contained in a table with named ranges and the data validation boxes get their info from a separate tab. The tabs are locked and there are ranges set to Allow Users to edit, mainly sort. Any ideas?????

If u look at the tab, dues_oct_dec, u will see in cell a1 an extra drop down. They randomly show up in the active cell at time of save/close.

This seems to be a bug that has crept into Excel. This sounds exactly the same problem as this thread

Hmmmm..I was looking for a thread like that. Not sure what building new columns will do but will try.I really appreciate your help....

The problem was not solved in that thread. The" ghosts" were removed and the file re-saved - without any guarantee of non recurrence.
Unfortunately still no understanding of the cause. But, given that "ghosting" is not a standard Excel feature, it looks like a bug.
Suggest you report it to MS

This code will remove the "Ghost" boxes but is not an overall fix. Found this on another thread.....

I have been using this solution for a couple of weeks now after removing all the ghost drop downs, I know this is a bit unconventional, and probably not the best way to do this. My Excel file is in use on 3 differet computers, and 3 different versions of Excel, and it "works". So at least as a temporary work around, it is ok!
