Every time I open an existing doc in Excel 97, I get an error saying that the page is already open. When I click OK, it opens a blank doc as well as the one I wanted............HELP!

I discovered that if you add "single space /e at the end of the path for Excel from the start menu, open excel then open the workbook, it will not open a new book with the existing one. I still cannot open a book without having excel open first. That still opens 2 books.

Try the usual fix(es) for this problem.
Tools>Options>General uncheck "Ignore other Applications"
Exit Excel and try again
If this doesn't work try to re-register Excel
Close Excel first and On the Windows Taskbar
1) Start>Run "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)>OK.
2) Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.
See the space between exe and /regserver
You might have to designate a full path to excel.exe.
In that case Start>Run "C:\yourpath\excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.
