Excel 2003, Windows XP, Stuck in Cell Selection Mode

Quick summary: Running Excel 2003 on Windows XP. Open either an
existing file or new worksheet. Click on a cell and become locked in
cell selection mode. No ESC, F8, mouse button or any keyboard
combination of keys gets me out of it. Have to kill Excel through Task
Manager to even close the application. Have had it happen when using a
connected USB wheel mouse, USB wireless wheel mouse, and even the
    laptop's touchpad/"****" mouse.

I've dug through the group and seen this issue mentioned a few times,
but haven't really seen a resolution yet and couldn't find anything on
the Microsoft site. Anyone have any new insights on this since the
    last posting back in January?

    Thanks in advance,
    Jay

I have the same issue with one of my users. She is running Windows Xp
Sp2 and Office 2003 on a brand new IBM T43 ThinkPad. This issue
happens to her in Excel, but also seems to carry over to Project,
Outlook and even Windows Explorer. I've tried everything including
replacing the machine fearing it was hardware related, but nothing
helps. I've checked the StickKeys and Accessibility Options.I have
many users with this same configuration and no one else has this issue.

Please tell me you found a resolution to the problem. PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!
