Will excel allow me to insert text with a formula? If so, how? How do I get Excel to calculate formula horizontally if one of the cells calculated includes text without getting an error message?

For example

If summating in cell D1 the contents of A1+B1+C1 and cell A1 has text in it, how do I get Excel to calculate anyway without an error message?

The sum function will allow you to add up cells even when some contain text. It just ignores the text. If you want the text in the result it's a little trickier, but you could do something like
