It sounds like you need to paste the code in.
Copy the sample of code given on the link (towards the bottom of the page)and paste it into a module.
Do this by right clicking on the small xl icon next to file at the top left hand corner, select view code.
This will open the Visual Basic window, click Insert > Module
then click on Module1 in the project window
then click the large window on the right and paste the code in here
then click the X (close) top right hand corner.
Now with the code in place the formula should work
Select A1 and colour the cell, then in A2 =ColorIndex(A1)
