from .txt to .xls how past data in seperate cells

I am trying to move some data that is in a .txt (notepad) file to an excel worksheet. The problem I am having is that when I past the data it all goes into one cell. (lets say I past 4 lines of data, then the first line will all go into 1A then the second will all go into 2A and so on and so forth). What actually I want to happen is that there is data that should be posted across 5 columns, ie. 1A, 2B, 3C, 4D, 5D) In the text file i tried to put up to 20 spaces between the data that i wanted to be in different cells but that didn't work. please help

Where data is pated into column A (A1 A2 A3 etc), hightlight the column and select Data, TEXT to COLUMNS, and specify Delimited, and by Space.

This should provide what you ask.

After you paste you data - select it and copy - then put the cursor in an empty cell right click the mouse and select PASTE SPECIAL - and check the TRANSPOSE box on the popup menu.
