Hiding numbers that are part of a formula

A very large workbook was created before I started my current job and it was not thought out very well, but it would be too huge of an undertaking to redo. We have cost $ in columns all over the spreadsheet along with a retail $ that is based on an entered formula. I can't hide the colums because it messes up the sheet. Is there a way that I can hide just the numbers and not affect the formula?
