    Squared symbol (small two)

Just started using excel in my new job, so at the min. i only know the bare basics. I need to know how to get the small 2, for when im entering metre squared data, and also the small half sign for when entering 2 1/2.

I have tried formattig and using subscript, and superscript, but it doesnt seem to work.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi dexista,

    Try Alt+0178 for m2, Alt+0179 for m3, Alt+0189 for half

Forgot to mention you could also go to Insert > Symbol, you'll find some others there

thanks for the reply. At the risk of sounding like a complete idiot, in a cell im entering m, then pressing ALT then pressing 0178 and nothings happening.

    EDIT:

Just googled it and apperently ALT + number only works with numeric keypad, unfortunately im on a laptop.

    Ok, no problem

Say you enter 10 into A1, then put your curser in the formula bar after the 10, then hold down Alt and at the same time (using the numbers on the right-hand side of the keyboard) press 0178, then let go.

    Is it working now?

No that doesnt work, the keyboard on this laptop has no numeric bit on the right hand side, the only numbers are at the top wich i have read will not work with ALT.

The only thing I can suggest is to do Insert > Symbol, or hook up a proper keyboard to the laptop if that's not a silly suggestion

A laptop usually has a Function NumLk/ScrlLk key that allows the keys MJKLUIO&*( to emulate the numeric keypad.

Use this Numeric to set Alt/0178 = Alt/MJ&*
Remember to hold the Alt key whilst the other 4 keys are pressed, then release the Alt.

Remember to Unset this numeric feature when finished.
