you can do it in some steps.
    after applying Auto Filter
copy filtered rows and paste where you want.
select the filtered data again and press Delete key to remove it.
now from drop down list choose All to show all data. (there will be some blank rows which you have deleted)
to remove those blank rows select cells in any column of your data starting from cell below the cell where drop down menu appears to the last cell with data in that column.
press F5 to open Go To window
    click on Special button
select Blanks and press Ok (it will select all blank cells in that column)
now keeping selected those cells right click on any of selected cells and click Delete... and choose Entire row and press Ok.
    blank rows will be deleted.

    hope this would help you.

    Regards.

thanks starguy, I'll try that .
But it's a solution for copying and I really want to cut. i.e. not only do I want to have the filtered rows in a new worksheet, I also want to remove them from the original worksheet.

ooops, ok.... sorry I was too hasty It worked very well - thanks. I had misunderstood 'select the filtered data again' and thought you meant in the worksheet I'd just copied it into. Now I understand
