Formatting Cell Fill Based on Adjacent Value

I'm trying to format cells B1:E1 to change colors based on value of A1.

ie...If cell A1 value is 1, then cells B1:E1 background changes to red.

If A1 value is 2, then cells B1:E1 background changes to blue.

How is this achieved? I've tried conditional formatting w/o any luck.

    conditional formatting is not intuitive

    but it works

in cell B2 choose format - conditional formatting

under condition 1 - choose formual is and in the space to the right type =A1=1
