    Hi all

    Can anyone help?

I want to be able to colour an excel cell diagonally. By that I want to have one half white and one half Red (for example).

    Can this be done?

    If so please help.

    Hi,

You can use triangles in Autoshapes to create the appearance of a colour split - it's not perfect, but I've used it on a couple of occasions to good effect.

    Hi,

You can also insert objects which have the exact same size as a cell ...
objects that you customize with Paint ...

If you are using Auto Shapes, it's best to set the zoom level at say 400%. You can then make a triangle to fit the borders of the cell exactly. Format the triangle with on border colour and fill with a colour. Make a copy of it, change the colour, then turn it upside down to sit on the first triangle to form an oblong. Get them centered over your cell, then use the "Select Objects" arrow and select both triangles and group them. Now click off the "Arrow" and set your zoom level back to 100%.

    Looks perfect!

    Diagonal Colours AND Values.

Thats all well and good, as long as you don't also want a value in the cell...
I've tried the idea of adding an autoshape, and it is always in front of the text for the cell value.
"Send to back" did not seem to make any difference.
The best I came up with was to set the shape to 50% transparency.
I also found it helped if I set the relevent cell borders to red, and included a red diagonal "border".

    Hi Mark,

There's no need to set at 50% transparency, you can get over it this way. If you have a value in the cell, say B5, you can make a Text Box active and put your cursor in the formula bar and put =B5, then whatever is in the cell will appear in the text box. Format the text box to no fill and no border and place it over the triangles.

    Perfect again!

Many Thanks SamuelT, Carim, oldchippy and Mark

    Hey Guys!!!

Thanks for responses and I understand all what you are trying to do.
However as soon as I insert new lines etc the triangles do not move with it.

I'm afraid it is not exactly what I wanted to do.

What I was experimenting with yesterday was trying to modify the Excel colour palette to include a new colour which has (for example) white at the top and blue at the bottom (using a custom colour).

That way I could shade every cell in accordingly just like using a normal colour.

However, after much hair pulling and keyboard bangin I gave in!!

    Any more suggestions anybody?
    Thanks
    Mark

There's possibly another solution? Do an Autoshape box, then right click to format, Colours and Lines > Fill drop down > Fill Effects > Gradient > Colours Preset > Choose "Early Sunset" > Shading Styles > Diagonal Up, then choose bottom left variant.

Or a variation on that theme maybe?

    Thanks OldChippy!

    Hey m8,

Yep I actually got to that point yesterday but as I will be shading in several cells its a bit of a pain to do.

    Thanks mate
