    Question Pictures and file sizes

    Hi all...

I have been using Excel 2000 for awhile now, and have what seems to be an unusual situation, not really a problem....

Take any 100k Excel .xls file. If I add a 900k .jpg picture, and save it, the file size is 1 megabyte. No biggie, right? But if I right click on the picture, select CUT, and then PASTE SPECIAL, and paste it as a PICTURE (.jpg), then save it, the file size goes way down to a much more reasonable 150k. And I don't notice any degradation of the the picture quality. Am I missing something here? Is Excel somehow initially interpreting the .jpg differently?

Note that this is just an example. It happens to me with ANY size Excel file or .jpg picture.

    Hi,
As one would expect, the larger file has the better quality.

To test, set you View to 25%, then drag the picture corner out to a full screen (not the edge, use the corner)
Then set the View to 400%

    The quality is very apparent.

However, this may not be a problem for your pupposes.

    Thanks for the input, Bryan.

But this doesn't explain how the file size is changing. Can anyone else repeat this in Excel 2000? Or ANY version?

The filesize changes because Excel has it's own 'DPI' setting, which is a lessor number than the original picture had. You can produce the same effect in any image editor, and is perhaps best know in the effects from a Happy-snap camera to a 5 megapixels one.

The less detail you keep, the quicker the picture becomes 'fuzzy' when you magnify the view.

If you rightmouse the picture, and Format Picture, Picture, Compress suggests te DPI defaults to 200, and a web of 96dpi.
