    Stuck in R1C1 reference style

I have tried to reset the cell reference style back to A1 from R1C1 (Tools-->Options-->General tab-->uncheck R1C1 reference style), but when I close Excel and reopen it, the reference style changes back to R1C1 style. When I make the change I described above using the Options feature, it changes it for the current file and saves it with the file. When creating a new file in the same session, it keeps the A1 reference style, but when I close Excel and reopen it, it returns to the R1C1 style. Any ideas about how to return to the default A1 reference style for the next Excel session?

    Thanks for any help!

Tools >> Options, see the General tab. Close Excel.

How is that different from what I have already tried? What do you mean by "see the General tab"?

The only difference is closing Excel immediately. That saves your preferences to the Windows Registry. It works for me.

Are you saying to close Excel while the Options dialog box is open and the General tab is visible? I tried that, but it is modal and requires me to close it before closing Excel. I am sorry to be so dense, but I am not sure I understand your instruction.

    I could be clearer.

I mean to make the change, Click OK, then close Excel.

I did exactly that from the start, but it did not work. I have had this same problem happen on another computer, but not on all pcs that I use. I just can't figure out why is happens with some and not all. Any other ideas?

    Hi,

Check to see if you have a hidden file called Personal.xls under > Windows > unhide.

If you do unhide it and then uncheck Tools > Options > General R1C1

It worked! That was the problem. I should have thought of that being the reason it went back to the R1C1 style every time Excel opened again. Thank you ever so much for your help.
