How to turn off the date automatically replacing typed text?

    Hi,

I type text like 2-1 into my cell and it turns it into Feb-2.
Is the a way to turn this off without using the ' in from of the text.

Also way to do this without formatting the cell as text since I need to save in
.dbf format which doesn't support this option.

    Thanks,

    Dino

    Hi,

the ' and the Text format are the two options,

for your purposes, perhaps two macros on Shortcut Keys (Ctrl/T and Ctrl/Shift/T ?)
First formats a specified column, or the current column, or a selection to 'Text' format whilst you do your input,
the second re-formats the column back to General etc after input is complete.

    Hello Dno,

You can't turn the date off in Excel, and you have listed all the other available options. Looks like you have quite a conumdrum.

    Sincerely,

    Thanks hth,

That worked great, I just formated as text, imputed my values then formated back to general and saved as .dbf .

    Worked great =)

A new issue has arisen though now. When I select all the data in the cells and then save as .dbf and then close and reopen the file. Each column in in the first row replaces my data with N1, N2, N3 etc

    Not sure why this happens.

Looks like you have quite a conumdrum.
Yep I'm full of those lol =)

    Hi,
the site http://web.austin.utexas.edu/archite...ips/excel.html has the paragraph "Text values in the first row of the range are used as dBASE field names, which are limited to 10 characters and cannot contain any spaces; subsequent characters are truncated. If the first row contains all numbers, automatic field names (N1, N2, and so on) are inserted in the converted file" so it appears that your data is the cause.
