Charting a time period

How do I set up a (bar) chart that displays the range of dates in which a person held certain job positions. For example:

John Smith
Staff from 1/1/96 through 4/31/1998
Manager from 5/1/1998 through 12/31/2001
Director from 1/1/2002 through 9/30/2004

You could use a pivot chart similar to the attached.
