checking cell contents and displaying a message

I want to be able to create a worksheet where a cell checks that a preceding cell has a formula in it and then displays an appropriate message (in another cell) according to whether or not it is correct. I'm not sure whether it is a macro or an if statement.
E.g. cells A1 & B1 have values in them, cell C1 is where the user types in the formula and cell D1 checks the contents of C1 and displays a relevant message, eg. correct or incorrect.

Any really. The idea is to check that the formula is correct and return a message. So, in cell C1 it could be =A1+B1 and cell D1 would check and return a correct or incorrect message.

I know Excel is good, but not that good, here's a list of some of the functions that could possibly go in C1 to give an answer?????????
